Do Dental Implants Hurt?
The surgical placement of the titanium post that will act as your dental implant “root” is completed while you are under anesthesia. You will not feel pain during the procedure and most patients experience only minor discomfort following the placement of the implant post.
In most cases, this discomfort subsides within days after the procedure and any lingering pain can be controlled with over-the-counter medication. Some patients also experience minor facial swelling for a few days following the insertion of the implant post.
While any discomfort associated with the implant root placement typically dissipates within a week following the procedure, your body’s healing process will take an additional three to six months. During this time, your jaw bone will grow around the titanium implant in a process known as osseointegration.
Once the implant root has properly fused with your jaw bone, you will return for the placement of your permanent dental crown. This process involves no pain and is a matter of affixing the crown to the implant post then bonding it in place.
